Tēnā rā koutou katoa!

Welcome to the 2019 National Kaumātua Service Providers Conference in Rotorua.

The National Kaumātua Service Provider Conference has been held for over a decade, to support our kaumātua service provider sector to better serve kaumātua. Through these forums, and in response to provider and kaumātua feedback, the national collective, Hei Manaaki Ngā Kaumātua, was conceived.

New Zealand, in line with global trends, faces a significantly increasing ageing population with forecasts for those aged 65 years and over, reaching up to 25.5 per cent by 2051. This fact, accompanied with the current prevalence of hauora, housing and welfare inequities faced by kaumātua/Māori elders, has led to the need for this conference.

This year’s conference is made up of keynote presentations, world café style workshops, concurrent speakers and panel discussions, in alignment with the overarching theme, ‘Empowering Kaumātua Mana Motuhake’.

We’ll build on past hui, bring experts from fields that either serve, conduct research and/or develop policy instrumental to kaumātua well-being, independence and autonomy. The aim being to provide an innovative and solution-focused platform for addressing the challenges that face kaumātua, while harnessing the opportunities that an ageing population brings.
